The term EDTA is used to refer to compounds that bind (chelane) to some molecules within the body.

I report some studies in the medical field.

Disodium EDTA appeared to have an effect in the treatment of the post-infarct course as it has been used for more than 50 years against arteriosclerosis, but the results have not been satisfactory (1).

Instead, in the treatment of shoulder tendonitis, the results suggest that the use of Disodium EDTA leads to a significant reduction in pain, improvement in shoulder function and disappearance of calcifications in 4 weeks, without adverse effects (2).

Contrary to what is reported in newspaper articles, where it was suggested that the administration of Disodium EDTA could be effective to reduce iron absorption after excessive oral dosing, oral administration in healthy volunteers has been shown did not significantly reduce iron absorption (3).

In Central America and Mexico, where the population takes the masa flour tortillas as a staple food, due to the high concentrations of iron absorption inhibitors, the addition of Disodium EDTA has improved the bioavailability of iron (4).
