Phenothrin è un insetticida base di piretro, anche conosciuto come fenothrin o Sumithrin. I composti del piretro (acido crisantemico) ottenuti per via chimica, hanno la caratteristica di imitare la piretrina (che si estrae dal crisantemo) che paralizza il sistema nervoso degli insetti.
Phenothrin agisce per contatto o per ingestione negli insetti, mentre è meno tossico per i mammiferi a causa della loro temperatura corporea più alta.
Può essere irritante per la pelle umana e per gli animali domestici, in particolar modo per il gatto.
E' classificato dall'EPA come non cancerogeno per l'uomo, a basse dosi.
Tossico per pesci ed altri animali acquatici, ma soprattutto per le api.
