Spinosad is a substance of natural origin that is obtained from the fermentation of the bacterium Saccharopolyspora spinosa, naturally present in certain soils.
It is used against insect pests in agriculture, greenhouses, gardens.
It is produced by Dow AgroSciences in Michiga, in Harbor Beach, using soy and cotton seeds.
In 1999 Spinosad was awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award which is the White House award given to products that combine chemistry and sustainable production.
In 2001 Spinosad entered the lists of products authorized by Swiss agriculture by the FIBL organization.
In 2002 it was approved by the American USDA as an active ingredient that can be used in organic farming.
In May 2008 the European Commission admitted the use of Spinosad in organic farming.
