Calcium orthophosphates is a calcium salt chemical compound of phosphoric acid, used in the medical, industrial and food sectors.

In view of the fact that a limited amount of materials seem to be tolerated by living organisms, a special technique called "Surface engineering" was developed. In 1975, this approach led to the introduction of a particular class of artificial bone grafts, composed of various implantable biomaterials and / or mechanically stable bio-devices (consequently, suitable for load-bearing applications) including calcium orthophosphates (CaPO4) which have allowed both to improve biocompatibility and to provide an adequate bond to adjacent bones. Over 5000 publications on this topic have been published since that date (1).
