Sodium hydroxide has been included in the list of safe food additives by the European Commission, however on 24 May 2016, EFSA (Food Safety Authority) requested further study for this component (1).
As regards insertion into cosmetic products, in 2012 EFSA also established that sodium hydroxide is not considered a skin sensitizer (2).
