NOVAMIN is a bioactive glass material made of silicon dioxide (SiO2), calcium phosphate (CaO, P2O5) and sodium (Na2O), also known as bioactive glass 45S5.

The synthesis process takes place in different steps:

  • Mixing of the raw materials, silica sand, sodium hydroxide, calcium phosphate and calcium hydroxide.
  • Melting. These materials are melted together at high temperatures (approx. 1400°C) to form glass.
  • Cooling and grinding. The glass is then cooled rapidly to prevent crystallisation and then ground into a fine powder.

NOVAMIN is a new biomaterial that disintegrates sodium and, on contact with saliva, releases calcium and phosphate ions. This temporarily increases the pH causing calcium and phosphate to precipitate in saliva to form a calcium phosphate layer on the tooth surface (1).

Effective in remineralising teeth (2), reducing dentinal hypersensitivity (3).
