Sodium carbonate peroxide is a chemical compound obtained by the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with sodium carbonate. sodium carbonate peroxide, also known as Sodium percarbonate, is a chemical compound used as a bleaching agent, disinfectant, and a source of hydrogen peroxide in many cleaners and cleaning products. It's a colorless, solid salt that breaks down in water to release hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate.

The name describes the structure of the molecule

  • Sodium - Indicates the presence of sodium ions in the compound.
  • Carbonate - Refers to the carbonate component.
  • Peroxide - Indicates the presence of a peroxide group in the compound.

Description of raw materials used in production

  • Sodium carbonate (Soda ash or Solvay soda) - An alkaline chemical substance.
  • Hydrogen peroxide - An oxidizing agent.

Synthesis process

  • Reaction - Sodium carbonate (soda ash) reacts with hydrogen peroxide to form sodium percarbonate and water.
  • Drying - The resulting solution is then dried to obtain solid sodium percarbonate.
  • Purification - Any impurities are removed to yield a high-purity product.

It appears as a white crystalline powder.

What it is used for and where

Cosmetics

Sodium carbonate peroxide is a restricted ingredient as III/12 a Relevant Item in the Annexes of the European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. Hydrogen peroxide and other compounds or mixtures that release hydrogen peroxide, including carbamide peroxide and zinc peroxide, with the exception of the following substances in Annex II: No 1397, 1398, 1399 (1).

Deodorant agent. When substances that give off an unpleasant odour are included in cosmetic formulations (typical examples are methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulphide derived from garlic), deodorants attenuate or eliminate the unpleasant exhalation.

Oxidising. This ingredient has the ability to change the chemical nature of another ingredient either by adding oxygen or by removing hydrogen.

Disinfection and cleaning

Sodium peroxide carbonate is used as a bleaching and disinfecting agent in different cleaning products including chlorine-free bleach. It removes the most difficult stains and acts as a bleaching agent.

Applications

  • Bleaching Agent - Used in laundry detergents and cleaning products as a bleaching agent.
  • Disinfectant - Releases hydrogen peroxide, which has disinfecting properties.
  • Stain Removal - Effective in removing stains from tea, coffee, red wine, and other organic stains from fabrics.
  • Eco-friendly Cleaning - Since it breaks down into non-toxic substances, it's considered an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cleaning agents.
  • Water Treatment - Used for treating and disinfecting water in some applications.
