Jojoba oil is a liquid wax, not an oil, nor a triglyceride, which is obtained from the Jojoba plant (Simmondsia chinensis). Glycerine is not present in its composition.

It appears as a transparent yellowish liquid with a characteristic herbal odour.

What it is used for and where

Medical

Like many vegetable oils, Jojoba oil has been commonly used as a topical therapy throughout the world, especially for skin care. It is a degradation-resistant oil with excellent oxidative stability.

This review summarises the evidence on the usefulness of natural plant oils in dermatology, particularly in repairing the natural barrier function of the skin.

The present study provides preliminary evidence on jojoba oil face masks that may be an effective treatment for injured skin and mild acne vulgaris (2).

The anti-inflammatory effect of jojoba oil in wound care has been demonstrated (3).

Cosmetics

Used as a soothing, humectant and antibacterial agent.

Dosage.

  • skin care products 5% ~ 10%
  • soap 0.5% ~ 3%
  • shampoo and conditioner 1% ~ 2%

Recently, ethoxylated (reaction between ethylene oxide and a fatty acid) and propoxylated (reaction between propylene oxide and amine, alcohol or acid) versions of Jojoba oil are commercially available. I do not recommend buying ethoxylated products as traces of carcinogenic compounds such as ethylene oxide itself and 1,4-dioxane may remain in them.

Other uses

It is also used in dietary food, pharmaceuticals, bio-diesel and lubrication. industry.
