Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical, synthetic organic compound, a bisphenol derived from diphenylmethane.
It appears in the form of a white granular powder.
What it is used for and where
Human body
Acts as an endocrine disruptor. Results of epidemiological investigations show toxic, endocrine, mutagenic and carcinogenic action (1). As a result of these investigations, bisphenol A (BPA) has recently been gradually replaced by similar chemical compounds such as bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol AF (BPAF), which are of less health concern.
Dentistry
Used for the production of resin materials.
Industry
Used by the chemical industry to produce plastic polymers, mainly poly-carbonates.
Food
The food industry uses it in the production of barrier coatings for the inner surfaces of food and beverage cans.
It is also used in general packaging and food packaging.
Banned in baby bottles by the European Community since 2008.
The European Commission's Scientific Committee on Food (ECSCF 2002) has indicated a permissible daily intake of 10 μg/kg/day (2).
Other uses
Production of polycarbonate, unsaturated polyester resin, epoxy resin, polystyrene. PVC stabiliser, ultraviolet absorber, plastic antioxidant.
Thermal paper.
