Omeprazole is a chemical compound, sulphoxide and member of the benzimidazoles, a chemical family with antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Medical
It acts as a proton pump inhibitor, as a potent inhibitor of gastric acid secretion and is widely used for the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux, dyspepsia and peptic ulcer (1).
It also exerts an antioxidant action due to its anti-tyrosinase mechanism (2).
