Barry Lyndon is a 1975 film directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on the novel "The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon" by William Makepeace Thackeray. The film tells the life story of Redmond Barry, a young Irishman who tries to climb the social hierarchy and become a nobleman, in the 18th century.

The story begins in Ireland, where Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal) is an impulsive boy who falls in love with his cousin Nora Brady. After a succession of duels and love affairs, Redmond chooses to leave Ireland to make his fortune. He joins the British army and takes part in the Seven Years' War.

In the course of the war, Redmond abandons the army and joins a pack of smugglers. He then joins the Prussian army and reaches the level of officer. During this time, Redmond meets Captain Potzdorf, who offers him an advantageous position.

Redmond escapes to England and makes his way in the world of high society by marrying Lady Lyndon, a rich English woman (Marisa Berenson). Redmond changes his name to Barry Lyndon and aims for a prestigious position in society.

However, his social ascent is compromised by overspending, family conflicts and the greed of Lady Lyndon's son, Lord Bullingdon. Barry Lyndon also has to deal with different personal dramas, including the death of his son and the failure of his marriage.

The story unfolds as a dark and dramatic epic, chronicling Barry Lyndon's race for success and wealth, but above all the consequences of his actions. The film delves into themes of ambition, greed, love, betrayal and the eternal struggle between social classes.
