Sertraline, a derivative of naphthalemine, is used to treat depressive disorders such as panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Sertraline has minimal inhibitory effects on the major cytochrome P450 enzymes, and few drug-drug interactions of clinical significance have been documented. Like other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, sertraline is well tolerated in therapeutic dosages and relatively safe in overdosage. (1)
Sertraline is bound to blood proteins and albumin.
The in vivo metabolism of sertraline in humans has not yet been studied. variants in a number of genes involved in the sertraline pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics appear to affect its metabolism and clinical response. (2)
Regarding extraction methods, this study shows the advantages and disadvantages of extraction techniques in terms of extraction efficiency and precision and also discusses protein precipitation as one of the latest methods of sample purification. In presenting the final determination techniques, i.e., HPLC, LC, and GC, the study focuses on the type of detector (UV, nitrate-phosphate, MS) as a basic factor determining sensitivity, expressed as detection and quantification limits achieved by a given method.
