Ozonated olive oil is the result of a long series of applications of ozone that date back at least fifteen years in dentistry. Ozone (O3) is a gas that has the property to oxidize inorganic and organic compounds with immediate reaction and is produced by ultraviolet radiation and lightning.
In medicine, ozone can be applied to tissues as ozonated water, gaseous mixture of ozone and oxygen, ozonated water in oil form such as ozonated olive oil. The following are used for oil ozonation: sunflower oil, peanut oil, olive oil, extra virgin olive oil.
Ozonated oil is used in medicine for chronic wound care and in dentistry as an antibacterial to control oral infectious microorganisms in dental plaque and as a subgingival irrigant.
The results of this study demonstrate that application of ozonated olive oil, the topical form of O3, can accelerate acute skin wound repair in the guinea pig model by promoting collagen synthesis and fibroblast proliferation at the site of injury and increasing the expression of growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor, growth factor β, and vascular endothelial growth factor. Taken together, we can infer that the application of ozonated olive oil can be considered as an alternative therapeutic modality to improve skin wound healing (1).
This study showed the antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity against S. Mutans of two formulations with ozonated olive oil: Ialozon Blue and Ialozon Pink The study showed the safety of these mouthwashes for daily use, although further data on their efficacy are needed (2).
