The cedarwood oil is made from the distillation of the leaves of the cedar tree (Juniperus virginiana, Juniper mexicana) that belongs to the Pinaceae family. It is also extracted from Cryptomeria japonica, a conifer.

The components of this oil, which is commonly used in cosmetics as stringent for the skin, are cedrene, thujopsene and cedrol and have antimicrobial and antifungal properties (1).

Positive activity of Cedrol on the airways is believed to be related to cardiovascular function (2).

It is present in the inhalant ointment Vicks VapoRub for the treatment of colds.
