Compendium of the most significant studies with reference to properties, intake, effects.

Pauly DF, Pepine CJ. D-Ribose as a supplement for cardiac energy metabolism. J Cardiovasc Pharmacol Ther. 2000 Oct;5(4):249-58. doi: 10.1054/JCPT.2000.18011.

Abstract. Metabolic support for the heart has been an attractive concept since the pioneering work of Sodi-Pallares et al. four decades ago.* Recently, interest has increased in the use of over-the-counter supplements and naturally occurring nutriceuticals for enhancement of cardiac and skeletal muscle performance.

Banfalvi G. Prebiotic Pathway from Ribose to RNA Formation. Int J Mol Sci. 2021 Apr 8;22(8):3857. doi: 10.3390/ijms22083857.

Abstract. At the focus of abiotic chemical reactions is the synthesis of ribose. No satisfactory explanation was provided as to the missing link between the prebiotic synthesis of ribose and prebiotic RNA (preRNA). Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is assumed to have been the principal precursor in the prebiotic formation of aldopentoses in the formose reaction and in the synthesis of ribose. Ribose as the best fitting aldopentose became the exclusive sugar component of RNA.

Dhanoa TS, Housner JA. Ribose: more than a simple sugar? Curr Sports Med Rep. 2007 Jul;6(4):254-7. doi: 10.1007/s11932-007-0041-8.

Abstract. This article reviews the current literature regarding the use of ribose as an ergogenic aid. Ribose manufacturers claim that it provides ergogenic benefit, but this has not been substantiated through scientific investigations.

Zemerov SD, Roose BW, Farenhem KL, Zhao Z, Stringer MA, Goldman AR, Speicher DW, Dmochowski IJ. 129Xe NMR-Protein Sensor Reveals Cellular Ribose Concentration. Anal Chem. 2020 Oct 6;92(19):12817-12824. doi: 10.1021/acs.analchem.0c00967.

Abstract. Here, we utilize the highly specific recognition of ribose by ribose-binding protein (RBP) to develop a single-protein ribose sensor detectable via a sensitive NMR technique known as hyperpolarized 129Xe chemical exchange saturation transfer (hyper-CEST). We demonstrate that RBP, with a tunable ribose-binding site and further engineered to bind xenon, enables the quantitation of ribose over a wide concentration range (nM to mM).

Del-Corso A, Cappiello M, Moschini R, Balestri F, Mura U, Ipata PL. The furanosidic scaffold of d-ribose: a milestone for cell life. Biochem Soc Trans. 2019 Dec 20;47(6):1931-1940. doi: 10.1042/BST20190749.

Abstract. The recruitment of the furanosidic scaffold of ribose as the crucial step for nucleotides and then for nucleic acids synthesis is presented.

Herrick J, St Cyr J. Ribose in the heart. J Diet Suppl. 2008;5(2):213-7. doi: 10.1080/19390210802332752.

Abstract. Ribose, a naturally occurring 5-carbon monosaccharide, is a key component of RNA, DNA (which has deoxyribose), acetyl coenzyme A, and ATP.

Dikici S, Yar M, Bullock AJ, Shepherd J, Roman S, MacNeil S. Developing Wound Dressings Using 2-deoxy-D-Ribose to Induce Angiogenesis as a Backdoor Route for Stimulating the Production of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor. Int J Mol Sci. 2021 Oct 23;22(21):11437. doi: 10.3390/ijms222111437.

Abstract. In 2017, our research group explored the development of wound dressings based on the delivery of this sugar to induce angiogenesis in chronic wounds. In this review, we will survey the small volume of conflicting literature on this and related sugars, some of which are reported to be anti-angiogenic.
