Schlosser A. Silicones used in permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes to reduce the fading and color change process of dyed hair occurred by wash-out or UV radiation. J Cosmet Sci. 2004;55 Suppl:S123-31.
Abstract. Different kinds of silicones were incorporated directly into permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes. To ensure that the silicone was deposited to the hair fibers Si deposition was measured. Hair treated with a silicone free control or the silicone modified hair dyes was tested for color and lightness change (fading) by washing the treated tresses several times and measuring the color change. In a second experiment, hair treated with permanent hair dye was treated with UV radiation to show if silicones can reduce the color change initiated by UV light. The influence of the silicones to dry combing forces of permanent dyed hair untreated and treated with UV was also investigated. The tests showed that dimethiconol/dimethicone mixtures can reduce the washout of hair colorant clearly and silicone resins like trimethylsiloxysilcate or propylphenylsilsesquioxane are able to decrease the color change occurred by UV radiation in dyed hair.
Vlckova J, Rupes V, Chmela J, Kensa M, Mazánek L. Ucinnost trí nových odvsivovacích prípravků na ves detskou (Pediculus capitis L.) v in vitro testech--krátké sdelení In vitro efficacy of three novel delousing formulations against the head louse (Pediculus capitis L.). Epidemiol Mikrobiol Imunol. 2011 Feb;60(1):41-2, 44.
Abstract. A total of 498 head lice (2nd and 3rd instar larvae, females and males) combed out of the hair of 38 children, were exposed to the delousing formulations Diffusil H Forte Spray (carbaryl 1%), Diffusil Care (isopropyl myristate, cyclomethicone, and dimethiconol) and Paranit (coconut oil, anise oil, and ylang ylang oil) in in vitro tests. The first two formulations, i. e. Diffusil H Forte Spray and Diffusil Care, caused 100% mortality of exposed lice, while Paranit only killed 12.2% of exposed lice.
Belsito, D. V., Klaassen, C. D., Liebler, D. C., & Hill, R. A. (2010). Dimethiconol and its Derivitatives as used in Cosmetics.
Abstract. The safety of dimethiconol and its esters in cosmetic products is reviewed in this safety assessment. Most of these polymers have the skin conditioning agent/hair conditioning agent function in common. The CIR Expert Panel has reviewed relevant data and concluded that these ingredients are safe in the present practices of use and concentration described in this safety assessment. While there is an absence of data on reproductive and developmental toxicity and limited tumorigenicity and metabolism data, the Panel reached consensus that these ingredients would not be absorbed through the skin and metabolized due to their high molecular weights, thereby obviating further concern over potential reproductive and developmental toxicity or carcinogenicity.
O’Lenick Jr, A. J., & Parkinson, J. K. (1996). A comparison of the ethoxylation of a fatty alcohol, fatty acid, and dimethiconol. Journal of the American Oil Chemists' Society, 73(1), 63-66.
Abstract. Knowing that dimethiconols or silanols condense under acid or alkaline catalysis, a study was undertaken to determine if these compounds could be successfully ethoxylated under conditions similar to those used to ethoxylate fatty alcohols and acids. It was anticipated that the condensation reaction would take precedent over ethoxylation reaction. We determined that ethoxylation reaction occurs preferentially to condensation reaction. In addition, kinetics of ethoxylation are similar to kinetics observed when fatty alcohols are ethoxylated. This reaction gives rise to a new class of hydrolyzable silicone compounds that have applications in industrial as well as in personal-care products.
