Polyacrylate-13 is a chemical compound, an anionic polymer without an oxetanil group, synthesised by free radical or anionic polymerisation techniques.

The "13" in the name refers to the average number of units repeated in the polymer chain.

Polyacrylate-13 synthesis typically involves polymerization of acrylate monomers. This can be achieved through a variety of polymerization techniques, such as free radical polymerization, which is one of the most common methods used.

The synthesis process takes place in several stages:

  • Preparation of raw materials: acrylate monomers.
  • Polymerization. Acrylated monomers are polymerized in the presence of a free radical initiator. This process forms the polyacrylate polymer.
  • Purification. The resulting polyacrylate-13 is then purified to remove any unreacted monomers and by-products. This is typically done through a series of washing and filtration steps.
  • Drying. The purified polyacrylate-13 is then dried to remove any residual solvent.

It occurs as a solid or yellowish liquid, water-soluble, flammable.

Polyacrylate-13 is a restricted ingredient as   III/66  a Relevant Item in the Annexes of the European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. Ingredient at risk: Polyacrylamides

Film-forming agent. It produces, upon application, a very thin continuous film with an optimal balance of cohesion, adhesion and stickiness on skin, hair or nails to counteract or limit damage from external phenomena such as chemicals, UV rays and pollution.

It has the ability to stabilise emulsions, particularly oil-in-water emulsions. It forms a film on the surface of dispersed droplets, preventing them from coalescing and maintaining the stability of the emulsion. This is particularly important in cosmetic products that contain both oil- and water-based ingredients, as it helps keep the formulation well mixed and prevents phase separation. It can provide a smooth and silky feel to the skin and enhance the overall sensory experience of a product. 

It is used in personal care products, emulsifying agent and thickening agent in creams and lotions.

Use:: 

  • In light self-tanning emulsions at levels of 0.5-1.0%.
  • in skin gel-creams at levels of 1.0-1.5%.
