Diheptyl succinate is a chemical compound using certain plant compounds such as wheat and castor oil.

It appears as a transparent viscous liquid

What it is used for and where

Cosmetics

Emollient suitable for use in water/oil and water/silicone emulsions with moisturising properties. As far as its safety is concerned, there is no risk of irritation or sensitisation.

Emollients have the characteristic of improving the skin barrier by means of a source of exogenous lipids that adhere to the skin, improving barrier properties by filling gaps in the intercorneocyte clusters to improve hydration while protecting against inflammation. Emollients are described as degreasing or refreshing additives that improve the lipid content of the upper layers of the skin by preventing degreasing and drying of the skin. The problem with emollients is that many have a strong lipophilic character and are identified as occlusive ingredients; they are oily and fatty materials that remain on the skin surface and reduce trans-epidermal water loss. In cosmetics, emollients and moisturisers are often considered synonymous with humectants and occlusives.

Other Uses

Plastics. Diheptyl succinate is a renewable bio-based alternative to conventional petroleum-derived plasticisers (1).
