Mentha arvensis leaf oil is the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Mentha Arvensis by a steam deatilisation process. The main components are menthol, menthone, α-β-pinene, limonene, eucalyptol, menthyl acetate. This oil has a higher menthol content than that obtained from Mentha piperita.
It appears as a colourless to yellowish or amber liquid. Flammable. Incompatible with strong oxidising agents. Condenses into needle-like crystals at low temperature.

What it is used for and where

Medical

In traditional medicine, it is used to treat coughs and digestive disorders.
The essential oil obtained from Mentha arvensis or peppermint (a cross between water mint and spearmint), consists mostly of menthol, which exerts an antifungal action that has been successfully tested against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium moniliforme (1).
This study explored the possibility of reducing postprandial glucose release and inhibiting postprandial hyperglycaemia with components derived from alternative plants for the control of diabetes. A methanolic extract derived from Mentha arvensis was effective in this anti-diabetic activity (2).

Cosmetics

Used as a fragrance, anti-itch agent, in personal care products.

Food

Inserted as a flavouring agent.
