La serotonina (5-hydroxytryptamine o 5HT) è un ormone che si trova nella ghiandola pineale, nel sistema nervoso centrale, nell'apparato digerente e nelle piastrine.
E' un neurotrasmettitore che regola importanti funzioni quali :
- umore
- sonno
- vasi sanguigni
Il livello e il sistema di serotonina sono diversi tra uommini e donne nelle quali i recettori sono più consistenti.
Numerosi sono gli studi sulla serotonina e sugli effetti legati al contrasto della depressione (1), a malattie legate a stress come la psoriasi (2) o l'ipertensione (3).
Piccole quantità di serotonina si trovano anche nella buccia della nocciola (4).
