CI 11710 is a chemical compound, a synthetic yellow monoazo dye also known as Pigment Yellow 3.

Pigment Yellow 3 is a specific yellow organic pigment used in various applications such as paints, inks, plastics, and more. It's also known by other names such as Hansa Yellow and is often used for its brightness and lightfastness.

Chemical name: 2-[(4-Chloro-2-nitrophenyl)azo]-N-(2-chlorophenyl)-3-oxobutyramide

Description of raw materials used in production

Azo Compounds: These are used as precursors to synthesize azo pigments.

Solvents: Such as alcohol, acetone, and other hydrocarbons to facilitate the mixing and reaction process.

Acids and Bases: Used to control pH during synthesis.

Catalysts: Specific catalysts may be used to speed up the synthesis reaction.

Step-by-step industrial chemical synthesis process

  • Preparation of Raw Materials: The raw materials are weighed and mixed in appropriate proportions.
  • Formation of Azo Group: The azo coupling reaction is carried out to form the azo group, which imparts the yellow color.
  • Precipitation: The pigment is precipitated as a solid from the solution.
  • Purification: Filtration, washing, and other techniques are used to purify the pigment.
  • Grinding: The pigment is ground into a fine powder.
  • Packaging: Pigment Yellow 3 is packaged for sale and use in various products, such as paints, inks, and cosmetics.

It appears in the form of a yellow powder.

What it is used for and where

Cosmetics

It is a restricted ingredient as IV/5  a Relevant Item in the Annexes of the European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. Substance or ingredient reported: 2-[(4-Chloro-2-nitrophenyl)azo]-N-(2-chlorophenyl)-3-oxobutyramide

It is an ingredient that makes the final product more attractive from an aesthetic point of view, but can pose a potential health risk with undesirable side effects especially when used continuously as it can be absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes.

Safety

The problem with azo dyes (monoazo or diazo) is photocatalytic degradation leading to oxidation and the subsequent formation of impurities such as aromatic amines, some of which have carcinogenic activity.

It is an ingredient that has some important health-related contraindications: it should not come into contact with mucous membranes. (Document 32009R1223. Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 November 2009 on cosmetic products (recast) (Text with EEA relevance)
