CI 12490 is a chemical compound, a red synthetic azo dye also known as Pigment Red 5

Chemical name

N-(5-chloro-2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-[[5-(diethylsulfamoyl)-2-methoxyphenyl]diazenyl]-3-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxamide

What it is used for and where

Cosmetics

Restricted cosmetic ingredient as IV/14  a Relevant Item in the Annexes of the European Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. Substance or ingredient reported: N-(5-Chloro-2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-[[5-[(diethylamino)sulphonyl]-2-methoxyphenyl]azo]-3-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxamide (Pigment Red 5; CI 12490) and its salts when used as a substance in hair dye products

It is an ingredient that makes the final product more attractive from an aesthetic point of view, but can pose a potential health risk with undesirable side effects especially when used continuously as it can be absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes.

Safety

It is an azo dye, a class of commercial organic dyes.

The problem with azo dyes (monoazo or diazo) is photocatalytic degradation leading to oxidation and the subsequent formation of impurities such as aromatic amines, some of which have carcinogenic activity. Use in hair colouring products is prohibited.
