Triazolam is a chemical compound, a benzodiazepine, a sedative-hypnotic drug generally prescribed for the treatment of insomnia that came onto the market in 1983 in the USA and has since been authorised in 90 countries.

What it is for and where

Medical

Take only under medical supervision

The mechanism of this drug acts on the receptor that mediates sleep (BNZ1) and on another receptor that controls different important physiological functions such as memory, muscle relaxation, and motor coordination (BNZ2).  Its half-life, i.e. the time it takes for 50% of the substance to decay, is rather short, 2 to 3 hours in healthy adults. This means that the sedative-hypnotic effect loses its effectiveness 24 hours after intake.

In England it was withdrawn from the market because of the risk of psychiatric adverse drug reactions, particularly amnesia, while it continues to be available in the United States (1). France and Italy banned 0.5mg packs in 1987, as did Germany in 1988. In 1988 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the 0.25 packet for healthy adults and the 0.125 mg packet (for the elderly or debilitated).

Like all drugs it can cause side effects. Always ask the physician.
