Vermiculite is an inorganic chemical compound, phyllosilicate mineral composed mainly of oxides of silicon, aluminium, magnesium, calcium and iron. It is similar to mica and belongs to the phyllosilicate group, a layered structural type 2: 1. The layers of clay material that make it up are about 1 mm thick and are composed of octahedral alumina or magnesia. It forms when volcanic rock reaches high temperatures.
