Curcuma Cureit® is a patented extract derived from the plant Curcuma longa, a member of the Zingiberaceae family commonly known as turmeric. The manufacturer claims that Cureit® is a special formulation of turmeric that is processed with a PNS system to achieve significantly higher bioavailability than other standards.

The exact method of synthesis with a PNS system is proprietary and not publicly available, however, the general process of extracting compounds from turmeric generally involves the following steps:

  • Harvesting and cleaning. Turmeric rhizomes (underground stems) are harvested and cleaned.
  • Drying and grinding. The rhizomes are then dried, often by heat, and ground into a powder.
  • Extraction. The desired compounds are extracted from the powder with a solvent, often ethanol or another alcohol. The solution is then filtered and the solvent is removed, leaving the extract.
  • Further processing. The extract may undergo further processing to isolate specific compounds or to modify them in some way. This may involve further extraction steps, chemical reactions or other processes.

Regarding the properties of Turmeric, it must be said that it has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties. It can be used to control the ageing process involving oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis.

Sicurezza

Turmeric is generally used as a safe food supplement, however, literature cites cases of turmeric-induced hepatitis (1)

Abstract. Turmeric is a commonly used oral herbal supplement with purported anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic properties. It is promoted as safe, with limited reports of severe adverse effects directly related to oral turmeric thus far in the literature. Herein we report two cases of turmeric supplement induced severe hepatitis. These cases highlight the need for physicians to be aware of patients taking this common supplement and the potential risks that exist.
