In this study, the goal was to test the benefits of maltitol and xylitol in a chewing gum, with or without brushing. In cases where regular brushing was performed, no chewing gum effects were observed on bleeding and plaque. In the absence of brushing, chewing gum with xylitol or maltitol has provided a significant inhibitory effect on gingivitis compared to chewing gum without these two components (1).
In dentifrices, maltitol and xylitol have been shown to reduce plaque and decrease oral bacteria (2) and in particular, xylitol as a mouthwash or toothpaste has significantly improved most of the symptoms and quality of life limitations produced by xerostomia (dry mouth) ) (3).
Effective in reducing the onset of acute otitis media, the most common bacterial infection among children up to 12 years old, reducing the adherence of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae to nasopharyngeal cells (4).
Aging and various dermatological disorders (eg irritant dermatitis) are accompanied by dry skin. Therefore, it is of great importance to identify and apply agents that can hydrate the skin, maintain cutaneous homeostasis and delay skin aging. The combined application of glycerol and xylitol effectively hydrates the skin, and improves its barrier function and mechanical properties. Thus, the combination of glycerol and xylitol can be a useful adjunctive therapy for dry skin and can also soothe age-related changes in the skin (5).
A formula of green tea, Vitamin C and Xylitol could increase the absorption of flavanol in green tea, improving the cellular antioxidant effects (6).
