Comoros

The Comoros, officially known as the Union of the Comoros, is an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean at the northern entrance of the Mozambique Channel, between Madagascar and the eastern African coast. The archipelago consists of three main islands: Grande Comore (Ngazidja), Mohéli (Mwali), and Anjouan (Nzwani), along with numerous smaller islands. The capital is Moroni, located on the island of Grande Comore. Historically, the Comoros have been an important crossroads for maritime trade between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The archipelago has undergone Arab, Persian, and African cultural and religious influences. The Comoros were a French protectorate and became independent from France in 1975. The economy of the Comoros is one of the least developed in the world, primarily based on agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Key products include vanilla, ylang-ylang (a key ingredient in perfume production), and spices. The country faces significant challenges, including poverty, unemployment, and a growing demographic pressure. The population of the Comoros is a mix of African, Malagasy, Arab, and Indian ethnicities, which is reflected in the rich Creole culture of the archipelago. Islam is the predominant religion and has a strong impact on culture and traditions. The official languages are Comorian, French, and Arabic. Culturally, the Comoros are known for their music, dance, and crafts. Traditional music, which includes genres like Twarab and Mgodro, is an important aspect of cultural life. Geographically, the Comoros islands are of volcanic origin, with landscapes that include beaches, rainforests and active volcanoes. This geographical diversity contributes to the archipelago’s rich biodiversity, which includes several endemic species of flora and fauna.
