Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea, sharing the island with Haiti to the west. The capital, Santo Domingo, is the oldest European-founded city in the New World. Dominican culture is a mix of indigenous Taino, African, and Spanish influences, evident in the music (such as merengue and bachata), dance, art, and cuisine. The economy of the Dominican Republic is one of the largest in the Caribbean, based on tourism, agriculture (particularly sugar cane, coffee, and tobacco), and services. The country is known for its beautiful beaches, all-inclusive resorts, and baseball, a very popular sport and a significant source of talent for the major leagues. The Dominican Republic has a complex history of colonization, dictatorships, and democratic transitions. Today, it is a representative democracy with growing economic and social development.
