Lithuania, officially Republic of Lithuania, is a country located in Northern Europe, in the Baltic region. It borders Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to the southwest. Lithuania also has a coastline along the Baltic Sea. The capital of Lithuania is Vilnius, known for its well-preserved old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lithuania is famous for its rich history and culture, with roots dating back to the Middle Ages. The country has a strong cultural identity, with unique traditions in music, art, and literature. Lithuania was one of the first Soviet republics to declare independence, in 1990. It is a member of the European Union and NATO.
