South Sudan, officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a country in East Africa. It became independent from Sudan in 2011, becoming the world's youngest nation. It is bordered by Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south, and the Central African Republic to the west. The capital is Juba.
The South Sudan region has been the site of prolonged and bloody conflicts, first during the First Sudanese Civil War (1955-1972), then during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005). These conflicts resulted in the deaths of millions of people and caused severe destruction. Conflict continued even after independence, with a civil war breaking out in 2013.
The economy of South Sudan is heavily dependent on oil, which accounts for the majority of its exports and GDP. However, the country faces enormous challenges, including a lack of infrastructure, corruption, poverty, and the consequences of ongoing conflicts.
The population of South Sudan is extremely diverse ethnically and culturally, with over 60 different ethnic groups. There are multiple languages spoken, with English as the official language. The majority of the population follows Christianity and traditional African religions.
Culturally, South Sudan is rich in diverse ethnic and cultural traditions. Traditional music and dance play an important role in local communities.
Geographically, South Sudan is characterized by a vast floodplain, with various regions of swamps and forests. The climate is equatorial, with a rainy season and a dry season.
