Taiwan
Taiwan, officially known as Republic of China (ROC), is an island located in East Asia, off the southeastern coast of mainland China. It is separated from China by the Taiwan Strait. The capital is Taipei. Taiwan has a complex history, with cultural influences from China, Japan (which ruled the island from 1895 to 1945), and the West. Taiwanese culture is thus a unique mix of traditional Chinese elements and Japanese and Western influences. Taiwan is known for its rapid economic development in the 1970s and 80s, becoming one of the "Asian Tigers". The economy is heavily oriented towards industry and technology, with particular strength in the electronics and semiconductor sectors.
