The Vatican City State, also known as the Holy See, is the smallest independent state in the world by both area and population. It is an ecclesiastical or sacerdotal-monarchical state ruled by the Pope who is the bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church. The Vatican City is situated within Rome, Italy. The Vatican City is governed as a monarchy with the Pope at the head and the economy is supported by the Italian government, contributions from Roman Catholics around the world, the sale of postage stamps and tourist mementos, fees for admission to museums, and the sale of publications. Population from 2018 to 2020: The population is stable as the state is primarily inhabited by members of the clergy, religious and lay workers serving the Vatican. The population is around 800 individuals.
