Europe is a continent located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere and mostly in the Eastern Hemisphere. Europe is the second smallest continent by surface area after Oceania. Its culture has been shaped by a millennia-long history, with roots in ancient Greece and Rome, and has played a significant role in the development of philosophy, science, and democracy. Europe was also the center of the Industrial Revolution and two world wars. Today, Europe is a continent of great cultural and linguistic diversity, with over 50 countries and numerous ethnic groups.
