EAN Code 979
The EAN code 979 was introduced as an extension of the EAN system for books, due to the depletion of available ISBN numbers under the 978 prefix. Like 978, 979 is dedicated to the unique identification of books globally, but with a twist: some of its subranges are reserved for printed music (scores), identified through the ISMN (International Standard Music Number) system.
Structure of the EAN 979 Code
EAN Prefix: The number 979 identifies the product as either a book or printed music.
ISBN/ISMN Code: Depending on the subrange, the digits following the 979 prefix correspond to the ISBN for books or the ISMN for printed music.
EAN Check Digit: The last digit of the EAN code is a check digit, calculated to ensure the barcode's integrity.
Importance of the EAN 979 Code
The EAN 979 code allows for an expansion in the number of books and musical scores that can be uniquely identified and managed in global commerce. It facilitates retail sales, inventory management, and lending operations, for both books and printed music, allowing for easy scanning and identification.
