Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa Michx. Elliott) is a deciduous plant belonging to the Rosaceae family.

Fairly well established as a use in fruit juices in the U.S., black chokeberry has, like all berries, antioxidant properties due to a high content of vitamin C and polyphenolic compounds including anthocyanins.

Contains tannins, responsible for the bitter taste, including quercetin (1).

It has given good results in the treatment of breast cancer (2) and as an anticoagulant because the study cited here has found that the application of black chokeberry has prolonged the time of blood clotting and has decreased over time the maximum rate of polymerization of fibrin in human plasma (3).

Some other studies question its overall effectiveness and suggest more in-depth studies (4).

Regular Black chokeberry intake, in healthy individuals, has improved endothelial function and has the potential for maintaining cardiovascular health in individuals at low risk of cardiovascular disease (5).
