Gene Wilder (Jerome Silberman, 11 June 1933, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - 26 August 2016 Stamford, Connecticut, USA), was an American actor, director, and writer. Raised in a Jewish family, Wilder developed an interest in acting after his mother was diagnosed with a heart condition and her doctor suggested he make her laugh. This advice deeply influenced Wilder, who found in acting and comedy a way to cope with life's challenges. After studying acting at the University of Iowa and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England, Wilder began his career on Broadway before moving to film.
