Plot
Captain Henri Rochard (played by Cary Grant) is an American army officer stationed in France during World War II. While working with the medical staff, he encounters Lieutenant Catherine Gates (played by Ann Sheridan), a French army doctor. The two immediately feel an attraction.
After many escapades and comedic situations, Henri and Catherine decide to get married. However, Henri, who is a French citizen, discovers that U.S. military laws do not allow foreign citizens to bring their brides to the United States without obtaining a special permit known as a "male war bride permit."
The couple then embarks on a series of desperate efforts to obtain the permit, including a disguised transformation of Henri into a "male war bride." Along the way, they encounter a series of bureaucratic obstacles and comedic situations.
