Potassium clavulanate is a semisynthetic beta-lactamase inhibitor isolated from the gram-positive bacterium Streptomyces clavuligerus and is always used in combination with amoxicillin for the treatment of infections affecting:

• lower respiratory tract
• urinary tract
• some skin infections
• sinusitis
• otitis media
• soft tissues caused by organisms such as H. influenzae, M. catarrhalise S. aureus

and is used in surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis and postoperative infections in urology as a beta-lactamase inhibitor (which can inhibit the activity of most penicillins) by preventing degradation of the β-lactam ring, thereby ensuring eradication of these harmful microorganisms. However Many pathogenic bacteria secrete beta-lactamases as a defense mechanism against beta-lactam antibiotics. Clavulanic acid is a potent inhibitor for bacterial beta-lactamases.

It comes in the form of a fine, white powder.

This study confirmed the efficacy of high-dose amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium in the treatment of children diagnosed with acute bacterial sinusitis (1).

Potassium clavulanate is believed to reduce glutamate levels and increase serotonin levels in the central nervous system, and the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of potassium clavulanate on ethanol consumption and decision making in the alcohol dependence model, alone and in combination with naltrexone (2).
