What it is used for and where
Cosmetics
The moisturising properties of Sodium lauroyl lactylate are due to the presence of lauric fatty acid, which also has antimicrobial characteristics. This chemical compound has the ability to penetrate deep into the epidermis and promote the penetration of other ingredients, which can be a plus or a minus point if unsafe ingredients are present.
Anionic surfactant with emollient function. Emollients have the characteristic of improving the skin barrier by means of a source of exogenous lipids that adhere to the skin, improving the barrier properties by filling gaps in the intercorneocyte clusters to improve hydration while protecting against inflammation. Emollients are described as degreasing or refreshing additives that improve the lipid content of the upper layers of the skin by preventing degreasing and drying of the skin. The problem with emollients is that many have a strong lipophilic character and are identified as occlusive ingredients; they are oily and fatty materials that remain on the skin surface and reduce trans-epidermal water loss. In cosmetics, emollients and moisturisers are often considered synonymous with humectants and occlusives.
