Ammonium alum is an inorganic chemical compound, hydrated natural double aluminium sulphate mineral salt usually existing as dodecahydrate or aluminium ammonium sulphate and produced by recovering alumina from clay.

It is used in vegetable glues, tanning, dyeing and fireproofing.

Listed in the European food additives list under number E520 as a firming agent.

Cosmetic astringent. This ingredient exerts a direct effect on the skin by tightening dilated pores by contracting stratum corneum cells and removing superfluous oil.
