Plot
The story centers on the Smith family, consisting of Chris (played by Emile Hirsch), his sister Dottie (played by Juno Temple), his father Ansel (played by Thomas Haden Church), and his stepmother Sharla (played by Gina Gershon). They are a dysfunctional family living in Texas and facing severe financial difficulties.
To solve their financial problems, Chris devises a plan to murder his mother and collect the insurance money on her life. To do so, he hires "Killer" Joe Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey), a private detective who agrees to carry out the murder in exchange for payment.
